The Langhe Biophilic Nexus – Honor Award Winner, 2026 International Competition

Awarded Honor Winner at the 2026 International Architecture Competition, Morphologic, recognizing excellence in biophilic and experiential design

The Langhe Biophilic Nexus is a regenerative cultural center set within the UNESCO-protected Langhe Hills of Piedmont, Italy, conceived as an immersive architectural landscape where built form, nature, and human experience converge. The building is not simply placed on the site; its form emerges organically from the slopes and levels of the terrain, responding to the natural characteristics of the environment. Its fluid, curvilinear geometry follows the land’s topography, creating a harmonious dialogue with vineyards, hazelnut groves, and forests. A central focal point anchors the design, from which volumes unfold, connecting cultural and public spaces while guiding movement and views through the site.

The façade, rendered in warm yellow-ochre, acts as a form of “land art,” reflecting seasonal shifts and blending seamlessly with the surroundings. Interior and exterior spaces are interwoven through landscaped courtyards, sunken gardens, and open voids, allowing daylight, fresh air, and landscape views to penetrate deep into the building. Circulation is transformed into an experiential journey, while the roofscape extends the philosophy of connection, offering accessible terraces and green surfaces that link ground, architecture, and sky, and provide platforms for gathering, contemplation, and interaction with nature.

Sustainability is embedded in the design. The partially earth-sheltered structure leverages geothermal coupling for passive thermal regulation, while curvilinear roofs channel rainwater into bioswales that irrigate gardens and replenish aquifers. Aerodynamic forms and central voids promote passive ventilation, and green roofs planted with native flora act as biodiversity corridors, reconnecting fragmented habitats and supporting pollinators. Multiple ponds underscore the vital role of water in the local ecosystem and agriculture.

Flexible, double-height public spaces foster creativity, dialogue, and cultural engagement, allowing programming to unfold organically across interconnected volumes. Every aspect—from modulated forms to the integration of light, vegetation, and water reinforces a biophilic ethos, situating humans within a living ecosystem rather than apart from it.

By merging regenerative architecture, environmental sensitivity, and cultural engagement, the Langhe Biophilic Nexus embodies architecture as a mediator between people and nature. It is a quietly iconic landmark that enhances its site, supports ecological restoration, and offers users an immersive, transformative encounter with landscape, art, and community, while celebrating the unique character and rhythm of the Langhe Hills.
